2003 – 2004 Mystery Quilt

Step 1

Welcome to the 2003-2004 Heritage Quilters Mystery Quilt!  Although I am seriously fond of 2 color quilts, I thought you might be getting bored, so I present to you for your quilting pleasure, a 5 color triangle-free Mystery in 2 sizes.

Both sizes given are BEFORE borders, so buy extra fabric as desired.  The small size will be 30” X 45”, and the large size will be 75” square.  I figure the small one could be a baby quilt without borders, or a couch quilt with borders, while the large size could go from twin to queen.

Now, first some pointers about color/fabric selection for this quilt.  The best way to think about these fabrics would be to imagine 2 pairs plus a neutral.  The pairs would work best as a light and dark version of the same color, and they should be opposite each other.  An example would be light and dark greens, light and dark yellows, and a beige.  Or in a more modern vein – light and dark greys, light and dark reds, and a bright white.  The important part is that the pair fabrics should be well related to each other, and the pairs should contrast well against each other.  The neutral does not have to be light, but it should not be too close to any of the other four fabrics.  Well, now that I have totally confused you, here are your shopping and cutting instructions.

Cutting for the small size:

From each of the two A fabrics cut 2 strips 5 ½” wide.  Out of these strips, cut 3” segments to get 24 pieces that are 3” X 5 ½”.  You will have 24 light and 24 dark pieces.

From each  of the two B fabrics cut 4 strips that are 3” wide.  Use two of these strips to cut 24 squares 3” X 3”.  You will have 24 dark and 24 light squares.  Save the other 2 light and 2 dark strips for a later step.

From the C fabric cut 1 strip 5 ½” wide.  Cut this strip into 6 squares 5 ½” X 5 ½”.  Cut 4 strips that are 3” wide and save them for a later step.

Cutting for the large size:

From each of the two A fabrics cut 8 strips 5 ½” wide.  Out of these strips, cut 3” segments to get 100 pieces that are 3” X 5 ½”.  You will have 100 light and 100 dark pieces.

From each  of the two B fabrics cut 16 strips that are 3” wide.  Use 8 of these strips to cut 100 squares 3” X 3”.  You will have 100 dark and 100 light squares.   Save the other 8 light and 8 dark strips for a later step.

From the C fabric cut 4 strips 5 ½” wide.  Cut these strips into 25 squares 5 ½” X 5 ½”.  Cut 16 strips that are 3” wide and save them for a later step.
